Soccer is for Everyone
The AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization) VIP Program provides a quality soccer experience for children aged 4 1/2 and up whose physical or mental disabilities make it difficult to successfully participate on mainstream teams. VIP teams may include, but is not limited to those who are: Autistic, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, blind or visually impaired, mentally or emotionally challenged, amputees or conditions that impair mobility.
HOW A VIP PROGRAM WORKS
VIP players sign up at the same registrations, play on the same fields, wear the same uniforms, and enjoy all the other benefits afforded every AYSO player. While all special needs children if possible should be placed on existing regional teams, VIP teams are created for the children whose challenges would prevent them from experiencing success in the regular program. Kids with special needs are estimated to make up approximately 10% of the school-age population. Special schools and classrooms can isolate these children so the VIP Program has been structured to integrate our special kids into the region through the assistance and encouragement of "buddies" from non-VIP teams, to help these players both on and off the field. Teams can have as few as five players, may be co-ed, and as with all AYSO teams, VIP teams are balanced with players rated by size and physical ability. Older and younger players form their own divisions, too, when numbers allow. Their needs are monitored closely by coaches, referees, parents (present at every practice and game) and the VIP Coordinator who oversees the program, thereby ensuring safety and fun for all.
The Players
VIP teams are typically small and coeducational. VIP teams are balanced by size, mobility and ability rather than by age. When numbers allow, older and younger age divisions may be formed as well. There are no upper age limits for VIP players. There are a wide variety of ability levels and sizes. Flexibility is the key.
Everyone Benefits
VIP benefits all participants, not just the players. Buddies and other volunteers increase their understanding and appreciation of people with special needs. They find their lives greatly enriched by their involvement with these new VIP friends. For parents and caregivers who may have thought they would never see their children playing a sport and belonging to a group, VIP renews hope and gives them joy, They are able to relax and enjoy watching their VIP players having fun like everyone else. Our goals for every participating player are to 1) Have fun playing soccer; 2) Increase positive self-esteem; 3) Understand soccer fundamentals; 4) Become more physically fit; 5) Learn teamwork and fair play; and 6) Meet and be comfortable with new people.
